General course details:

This course follows the Art and Design (Fine Art 3202) syllabus and gives students the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skill and understanding from their Key Stage 3 course.  This course will allow students to develop their interest and enthusiasm for art, craft and design, with a particular emphasis in fabric based design.

There are two parts of the course offered for assessment:

Coursework:                   consisting of two, three or four units of study and is 60% of the total marks.

Controlled Test:              a final examination providing 40% of the total marks.

What topics are covered?

Students will be expected to produce a variety of art, craft and design work on a number of different themes or topics.  These may include such areas as starting points as still life, landscape, the human figure, contemporary design and fashion.  Students will be expected to study the work of others and relate it to their own work.  Candidates will be expected to work in drawing, paint, printing and a variety of textile mediums.  They will be expected to explore the medium in one or more of the following: printed and/or dyed materials, domestic textiles, constructed and/or applied textiles and fashion and/or costume.

What can I expect to do in class?

Initially students will be taken through a foundation course in order to build a sound base from which to develop their skills as artists, craftspersons and designers.  Students will be able to prepare and research from a given topic and develop this into a final outcome using some of the following: printing, tie-dye, batik, transfer printing, fabric construction, stitching and weaving.

Will I need any special equipment?

In order to participate fully at school and at home, students are expected to equip themselves with some basic art and craft materials.  This will include pencils, watercolours, coloured pencils, pens and a simple sewing kit.  Students will also be expected to keep a sketch book or visual journal, usually A4 size at GCSE level.  The most important thing to bring into lesson is enthusiasm!

What else do I need to know?

Art (textiles) GCSE is a link to AS and A2 level study.  It can also be used to support further study at college.
