Key Stage 5

At Key Stage 5 students taking AQA Mathematics have an option of taking Pure Mathematics with Mechanics or Pure Mathematics with Statistics.

The pure maths course, followed in Years 12 and 13 is worth 2/3  of the AS and A2 course. It builds on the algebra, geometry and transformation work done in Key Stage 4, but the major element is algebra. The course includes work on:

Surds
Coordinate Geometry
Quadratic Functions
Polynomials
Simultaneous Equations
Factor and Remainder Theorem
Transformation of Graphs
Differentiation and Integration
Trigonometry
Binomial Expansion
Arithmetic and Geometric Series
Logarithms

The mechanics course in Years 12 and 13 is 1/3 of the AS and A2 course. This course has to be taken along with Pure mathematics. The aim of the course is to be able to apply mathematics to everyday occurrences. The course includes work on:

Forces
Vectors
Momentum
Equilibrium
Centres of Mass
Energy
Motion

The statistics course in Years 12 and 13 is 1/3 of the AS and A2 qualifications and runs alongside the pure maths core modules. The aim of the course is to be able to organise, analyse and test statistics and draw accurate conclusions from this. The course includes work on:

Numerical Measures in Statistics
Probability
Binomial, Poisson and Normal Distributions
Correlation and Regression
Confidence Intervals
Hypothesis Testing and the Use of Contingency Tables
