AS Media Studies

What will you study?

Modern Media Forms

  • Contemporary film - a range of genres will be studied including the Action/Adventure genre and Thriller genre. In addition, film marketing and distribution as well as the British film industry will be covered at A2.
  • Television sequences - a range of television genres will be covered such as Soap opera, Sitcoms, Music Videos, and Television Advertising. At A2 students will study Crime Drama in depth for one of their exams.
  • Advertising images
  • Tabloid and Broadsheet newspapers
  • Radio sequences
  • Magazines front covers

Media Representations and Reception

This will involve the study of how people are represented in the media and how media texts are received by audiences who consume them. This element of the course will be studied through case studies from a range of different media such as film, television, advertising, magazines, newspapers and the internet.

Making Media Texts

Students will complete a pre production and production piece. Examples include a draft for a print advert, a mock up of a magazine front cover for the pre production. For the production students created a music video or the opening for a Thriller film.

Benefits

This course allows students to develop a critical and analytical approach to studying the media texts they encounter. It encourages their creativity as well as improving their ability to think independently. For those who wish to pursue a career in the media it provides an excellent opportunity to learn production skills such as filming and editing.
