Success at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4
What can students and parents do to prepare themselves for studying and for success at Key Stages 4 & 5?
Students:
Ask your teacher about the structure of each course you follow.
What coursework is there?
When are the exams?
What percentage of the final mark does each exam and coursework piece count for?
Read the information the school has provided.
Write all coursework deadlines and modular exams in your diary and a wall planner. Use the booklet provided by the school.
Create a work area at home where you can complete your work comfortably without being disturbed.
Ask your parents to regularly check with you the work that you are completing and when you need to complete it by.
Agree rules for completing work at home now. It might save 'heated discussions' with your parents later on in the year.
Parents:
Use Academic Mentoring sessions at school to explain to tutors in which subjects you might require help with your child.
Ensure you have a copy of the coursework deadline brochure
(downloadable copy on the school website) and check that your child is
completing the work as described.
Do you know the teachers names of each of your child's subjects and how to contact them if you need to?
Discuss your child's and your own expectations about how much work they
should be completing at home and when the best time to do it is.
Contact us if you have a concern.
