Year 7
What a wonderful start and what a superb group of young people. It has been a privilege to be their director of learning. Comments such as… ”they are so polite”… “they appear really confident”… “my class is so enthusiastic”… ”they are making friends really quickly”… ”the students are so friendly”… have been heard around the school from a number of members of staff including the canteen. But most important have been the comments from the students who have been asked by their tutor how they are getting on and how they feel. After the first day comments such as… ”it has been really fun”… “I got lost but a teacher helped me”… ”I have met some nice new friends”… “I am looking forward to my lessons tomorrow” were a delight to hear. Naturally there are a few students who are finding it a little harder to adapt to the bigger school but Mr Martin and Mrs Culpin, along with the tutors have been working hard to reassure and support these students so they feel more relaxed and ready to learn.
This second term for our Year 7’s is proving to be a very busy one. We have been holding elections in our Tutor Groups to elect representatives for the school’s Student Voice Council. Competition was fierce with each Tutor group sending two representatives to our first Year group meeting on Wednesday 9 November 2011. At this meeting we elected our Chair person Beth Barker, Vice Chairperson William Deeks and two Secretaries Emily Keenan and Lizette Okyere who immediately had the job of minuting the meeting! You can see who our Student Voice Representatives are on our Family tree at the bottom of this page.
Well done to our Chaffinches and Kestrels who have been fundraising. Chaffinch raised £28.53p exceeding the target of £20 set by their Tutor Mrs. Devine. They ran a variety of competitions including name the Teddy (he was called Rufus), guess how many sweets in the jar, held two raffles and collected loose change in assembly. Our Kestrels have raised £50 for charity by picking up acorns from the school site, which one of our Governor’s then bought to feed her pigs. 16 Kestrels together with Miss Ashton their Tutor and Mrs Bradwell then visited the pigs to feed them and got themselves into the local press to boot.
Our Kingfisher’s wrote a piece for the bulletin last term and our Nightingale’s have been hard at work producing a piece for the last School Bulletin of this term. On 14 October our Swifts took a brilliant assembly all about settling into Secondary School. This touched on not knowing where they were going during their first few weeks at EPCS, homework and who to speak to if you’re being bullied. Our Robins are currently rehearsing for their assembly on 5th December, their topic being Top Secret.
We continue to monitor attendance and progress and on the whole are pleased with how our students have settled in and are progressing.
