What does this Course lead to?
Mathematics graduates have jobs in accounting and finance, business, medicine, engineering, forensic science, teaching, research, IT, programming, Web and games development, forecasting, design and construction, space sciences and many other disciplines.
According to the Russell Group (who represent the UK’s best 24 universities), “Maths is a ‘facilitating’ subject, which means that it will help you to study lots of other subjects and pursue lots of different careers”. Mathematics teaches you how to think; employers like that! It opens a lot of doors, people with Maths degrees can usually walk into any profession they want.
What will I study
Further Mathematics A level is designed to be two year course. The course builds on and extends the Maths A level syllabus in more depth. The content below makes up fifty percent of the course. The additional content is decided by the individual exam boards. There is the choice of studying further mechanics; statistic; decision; and mathematical reasoning. The choice will be made in discussion with the class and reflect their strengths and any mathematical skills required for their other subjects.

Proof, Complex numbers, Matrices, Further algebra and functions, Further calculus, Further vectors, Polar coordinates, Hyperbolic functions and Differential equations.
What are the benefits of studying this course and what will I gain from it?
The topics you study for Further Mathematics will complement the A Level Mathematics syllabus giving you a broader knowledge base for higher education courses. It will enable you to combine your knowledge from all topics creatively. It is highly regarded by universities and employers.
Some universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and Warwick require candidates to have studied Further Mathematics if they are applying for a mathematical degree course.
How will I be assessed
All students will be assessed on their knowledge of the Further Mathematics course and any prerequisite A level mathematics material. As in GCSE there is a large emphasis on modelling, problem-solving and reasoning. Some questions will link different aspects of the course. There is no coursework.
We regularly test students every term using past exam papers. Students are expected to achieve at least 60% (approximately grade C) to pass. Resits will be available but students who continually fail these tests are in danger of jeopardising their place on the course.
