Today students in Years 7 and 8 visited St George’s School in Ascot for the launch of the Berkshire Book Award. Students were invited to attend if they were a top visitor of the library throughout the month of September.
The 13 students involved were able to meet with author Laura Wood, who signed their books and gave a talk about her journey into writing. Laura’s talk was fantastically motivational, offering students tips on building characters, how to convert inspiration into ideas and how to become a published writer. Her top tips were to never underestimate yourself, to find time to write (even if only for short periods), to enter writing competitions that give you a deadline to work towards and to be creative, reversing your readers’ expectations.
The Berkshire Book Award encourages all students across Berkshire to get involved in the nomination process. If you would like to have your say, check out their website at: https://www.berkshirebookaward.org.uk/nominate
The winner from last year, ‘A Spoonful of Murder’ by Robin Stevens was also highly talked about and was particularly recommended to students if they like a mystery! Laura Wood has published 7 novels which were also highly recommended for anyone seeking new reading material: Poppy Pym adventure novels are perfect for Y7 and Y8 readers whilst, A Sky Painted Gold and Under A Dancing Star are young adult fiction, more suitable for Y10 and Y11. Her newest release Vote for Effie focuses on a girl starting a new school who decides to try and find her feet by campaigning to be Student Council President – this would be a great new read for any student!
